Daniel Kellenberger
A Photographer of Stature and Curiosity
Daniel Kellenberger, a photographer hailing from Männedorf, is a man of the world — his work takes him wherever the light is right and the story compelling. Born in 1980 in the vibrant city of Hong Kong, he owes his unconventional origins to his adventurous parents, who emigrated from the tranquil expanse of Appenzell, Switzerland, but were stationed in Asia for professional pursuits.
Following in their nomadic footsteps, I, too, ventured beyond the Swiss borders after completing my Matura. My chosen destination? The small yet magnificent realm of Scotland, where I pursued a degree in film at the Edinburgh College of Art. The rugged land, its endearing people, and their unparalleled sense of humor left an indelible mark on me. While my initial ambition leaned toward directing, I soon discovered my true calling: the art of composition and the allure of technology. Thus, I gravitated towards cinematography, finding joy behind the camera lens.
Returning to Switzerland, I first lent my skills as a cameraman for VIVA and later as an editor for Swisscom. During this time, photography began to reveal its charms—how a single image could encapsulate the roles of author, director, cameraman, and lighting designer all at once. Inspired, I expanded my horizons, declared my independence in 2006, and embarked on a career as a freelance photographer. By 2007, I had the privilege of working as a press photographer for the Tages-Anzeiger, initially on staff, and later as a freelancer. My portfolio grew to include collaborations with esteemed publications such as Blick, SonntagsBlick, SonntagsZeitung, Die Weltwoche, BILANZ, and the Migros Magazin.
From 2008 to 2022, I co-managed a studio in Uster under the banner KellenbergerKaminski. During this time, I expanded my work to include projects with advertising agencies and corporate clients, adding another string to my professional bow.
Since the autumn of 2022, I have returned to the independence of a solo venture, now operating my own studio in Stäfa. My curiosity and passion for the craft remain as keen as ever.
Beyond photography, I have also immersed myself in the noble arena of politics since 2010. This culminated in my appointment as a member of the Männedorf municipal council on July 1, 2022—a role I regard as both a privilege and a responsibility. After all, democracy thrives on participation, and this position offers a refreshing contrast to my meticulously scheduled days as a photographer. It grants me a rare glimpse into, and the opportunity to shape, the fabric of our daily lives.
Oh, and aye—my English carries a wee bit of a Scottish accent.
